There are lots of ways for you to help, regardless of how much free time you have:
- Talk to your local candidates. (Very little time) As the November 2010 election draws closer, the candidates who really want to win will be pulling out all the stops, and in some cases that will mean going door-to-door to introduce themselves and talk to residents in their district to find out the things that important to their potential constituents. Tell them how important passing a Massage Therapy law is to you.
- Sign up for your MN House member's email updates. (Very little time) This gets you an "inside baseball" view of the goings on at the Capitol, and what your representative is doing in your name, (they are there to represent your voice remember.) You will also get announcements of dates and time your Legislator will be in your community to hear from constituents about the issues that are important to you. They hold these surprising frequently and being a familiar face to them on an issue can pay big dividends for our effort! Simply go to their webpage (find it HERE using your home address), and find the "sign up for my updates" (or some similarly titled) link on their personal page.
- To be a Super Star, sign up for the Representative for your work address(es) as well!
- If you get to go to a meeting, email us ahead of time and let us know and we will send you some tips and talking points if you want them.
- Help Recruit Supporters. (Very little time) Other ways to help include letting not just other Massage Therapists know about this effort and directing them to this website, but also friends, family, neighbors, clients know about the effort.
- Be willing to call your Legislators. (Less than a minute per call) Making a simple phone call to tell your elected representatives what you want them to do is so simple and yet so powerful. One legislator we spoke to told us they decide their position on an issue based on as few as three phone calls coming into their office. THREE! And if you have spoken to your representative before, it carries even more weight since they know you know them and they know you're watching their votes on your behalf.
- Help a Candidate get elected. (as little as 1-2 hours during the campaign season) When candidates run for office, they remember the folks that help them win. If you are one of those folks, that will give you clout in the soon-to-be legislator's office when our bill comes in front of them. Helping them win can be as simple as delivering yard signs for an hour on a Saturday morning, or stuffing envelopes in their campaign office. This can make a HUGE difference for the effort, and you can help someone you believe in get elected. If you need help figuring out who your candidates are, email us and we'll email you a link to the candidates in your district.
- Be a Super Caller. (Up to 3 hours per month) Super Callers will get a list of 3-5 legislators offices to call as we get closer to having hearings at the Capitol. We will also be developing a training video for tips and what to say when you call. This project makes all the difference when we have a key legislator on a key committee and not a lot of registered supporters in his or her district.
- City Ordinance Project. (Up to 3 hours per month) Callers are needed for the City Ordinance Project to help us catalog the city massage "license" laws all over the state. These phone calls can easily be made from home or office, and we will even give you a form with the questions to ask so we are getting consistent information. We have already seen great successes with this project, bringing legislators to our side when they hear how restrictive and cost-prohibitive, not to mention demeaning, some of these ordinances are. We will be posting a page soon with the results our callers have found for us so far!
- Other Projects. (Variable times) We will have several one time projects over the next few months we could really use your help with. From stuffing envelopes to utilizing technical/computer skills, we need YOU! See below for how to sign on.
